Managing MARC Record Sets with MarcEdit with Linda Woodcock

Workshop goals:
· To introduce the MarcEdit software and its capabilities for managing files of MARC records
· To provide hands-on experience with performing a variety of tasks using MarcEdit
· To share strategies for successful loading of large record sets

Who should participate:
This workshop will be of interest to anyone who is working with files of MARC records being loaded into their ILS. They may be loading files of authority records following authority processing, files of bibliographic records sets such as e-journals or ebook collections, or files of selection, order or bibliographic records received from a vendor.

Description:
This 4-hour course will provide a solid introduction to the use of MarcEdit software for viewing, editing and manipulating files of MARC bibliographic records. Participants will learn how to open a MARC file for eye-readable viewing; how to combine two or more files; how to split large files and how to extract selected records from a large file. Participants will also learn how to perform a variety of batch editing tasks in order to modify MARC record files to suit local needs.

Instructor Bio:
Linda Woodcock is Technical Services Librarian at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She been cataloguing with MARC for 25 years and has worked on the loading of a wide range of MARC record sets, including files of authority records, large ejournal sets, files of ebook collections sets and files of order records with holdings information. MarcEdit has proven to be an invaluable tool for managing the growing number of electronic collections and for keeping authorities current.
