An Introduction to Health and Medical Reference Questions

Workshop goals

  • To heighten your awareness of health information needs and providing reference services for your users
  • To provide hands-on experience using online health information, medical databases & search tools
  • To discuss how to manage user expectations, privacy and confidentiality issues

Overview

This 3-hour course provides an introduction to health information sources and some basic techniques to answer reference questions in Canadian library settings. Participants are introduced to key reference sources online and in print, and techniques to evaluate websites ‘on the fly’. Search tools such as PubMed and Google will be introduced as well as fee-based tools such as health indexes, the eCPS and the Cochrane Library. The instructor will use examples that touch on cultural sensitivities and health literacy issues in a variety of library settings, both academic and public.

Methods

Instructional methods include lecture, demonstration, discussion, small group work and hands-on exercises.

Instructor Bio

Dean Giustini is a branch librarian at UBC's Biomedical Branch Library at Vancouver General Hospital. He teaches the health librarianship course at the School of Library, Archival and Information Studies at UBC. Dean maintains several blogs, was 2007 Canadian Hospital Librarian of the Year and named a 2009 Library Journal Mover and Shaker.
