Community Development Workshop CANCELED

The Community Development in a Library Context workshop scheduled for Kelowna on April 26th has been canceled. We will try to reschedule the session for later in the year. The BCLA Office will be contacting those who are registered to arrange for refunds.

Metadata Standards and Applications - May 10&11 (BCCATS)

BCCATS (BCLA Cataloguing and Technical Services Interest Group), OCLC Western, and Simon Fraser University are co-sponsoring a spring workshop entitled Metadata Standards and Applications. The workshop will be held on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, at SFU Harbour Centre in downtown Vancouver.

This two-day workshop is the second course in the series "Cataloging for the 21st Century." The goal of the course is to relate what attendees already know about library catalog metadata to digital library metadata, thereby preparing them to apply their current knowledge to new areas. The course explores the following topics:
  • Introduction to digital libraries
  • Metadata models
  • Overview of metadata standards and applications
  • Metadata interoperability and distribution
  • Controlled vocabulary use in metadata
  • Application profiles
  • Quality considerations and monitoring metadata developments
This course is designed for practicing catalogers (with or without MLS degrees) from all types of libraries, with a working knowledge of MARC and concepts of bibliographic control.

Gayle Palmer and Linda Stewart, from OCLC Western will be the instructors for the course.

Prov. Reading Programs for Children, Teens & Families - April 19

Hello Children's & YA Services Staff!

You are invited to attend a free workshop on provincial reading programs for children, teens and families, on Thurs. April 19, from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Burnaby Public Library - just before the start of the BCLA conference.

The workshop will be of interest to public library staff, school library staff, students in library education programs and others working in library settings involving young people and families.

About Brian Bell
Brian Bell, recently appointed Director, AlouetteCanada, is on a 1-year secondment from the Oakville Public Library where he has been Director of E-Services since 1987. In addition to his new appointment, Brian is on the planning committee for the Canadian Digital Information Strategy (Library and Archives Canada) and on the Board for Canadiana.org.

At home, Brian works closely with colleagues in HALINET (the HALton Information NETwork), a consortium of neighbouring libraries facilitating collaborative, web-based services including digitization of local images and newspapers. Brian was presented the W.J. Robertson Medallion for Public Librarian of the Year at this year’s Ontario Library Association Super Conference.
