Learning Opportunity from ALPS - Friday June 16 2006

For those that may not be signed up to the ALPS email list

Instant Messaging in Academic Libraries.

Are you interested in instant messaging (IM) as a way of providing reference in academic libraries? Would you like the chance to try out some of the different software options?

Join us for an overview of how academic libraries in Canada, including the UBC Library, are using IM to provide reference to their students. We will also review two multi-protocol IM clients, Gaim and Trillian, and discuss the challenges of IM as a tool for reference provision.

There will be opportunities during this session for participants to get hands on experience with IM tools.

Presenters: Lindsay Ure and Katherine Miller, UBC

Date/Time: Friday, June 16, 2006 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM

An Informal Survey

The Committee is interested to know if there are any specific courses or areas that you would like to see us try and address?

Also, if you live outside of the Lower Mainland where would you be willing to travel to for a class, or what would be a convenient location to offer courses? The Committee will be offering classes outside of the Lower Mainland. To make this more economical and beneficial for participants, we will endeavour to make it a full-day session with either 1 or 2 classes.

You can leave your thoughts in the comments field for this post, or you can email us at cont.ed.bcla@gmail.com

Welcome to the BCLA Continuing Education Committee Blog

(now say that quickly 3 times)

The Continuing Education Committee has been looking at creating new and vibrant courses for all BCLA members, with the aim of offering these classes throughout the province. To that end, the Committee has decided to try and develop our new crop of courses along the themes for Career Management and Leadership. Now these courses will not be just for budding CEOs, but we hope they will be useful to everyone who works in a library. We will touch on such topics as conflict resolution in the workplace, public speaking and ethics. So check back regularly or subscribe to the RSS feed.
